A Passion for Dentistry

From the age of 14, Dr. Hai Nguyen knew he wanted to be a dentist. He comes from a family of dental professionals: his uncle is a dentist in California and his great uncle was the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Saigon, Vietnam, prior to the end of the Vietnam War. These two men provided great role models and inspired Dr. Nguyen.

In 1984, Dr. Nguyen and his family immigrated to Edmonton from Vietnam. That year the Oilers won their very first Stanley Cup and inspired Dr. Nguyen to learn to play hockey. Unfortunately, learning to skate came with a high price: Dr. Nguyen broke his two front teeth! The care he received from the kind and skilled dentists at the University of Alberta Hospital further strengthened the doctor’s desires to become an oral healthcare provider.
